Engraven Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Engraven is an iPhone, iPad and Mac journal from Parallel 41 LLC ("Parallel 41," "we," or "us"), for one person or for two people who share a journal. This policy explains what the app stores, where it goes, who can see it, and how to delete it.

No account

Engraven has no sign-in of its own and never asks for your email address or phone number. It asks for the name you want shown on what you write.

Your journal stays on your devices and in your iCloud

Your entries, photos, videos, places, weather, tags and settings are stored on your devices and in your own iCloud account, using Apple's iCloud (CloudKit), so they stay in sync across your iPhone, iPad and Mac. Automatic backups are saved in Engraven's folder in your iCloud Drive. Apple encrypts this data on the way to iCloud and on its servers. Parallel 41 has no server for your journal and cannot see any of it. Apple's privacy policy covers how Apple stores iCloud data.

Photos you add from your library are linked to the original in Photos where possible, rather than copied. Engraven never deletes anything from your photo library.

Sharing a journal

You can share a journal with one person you invite. They see that journal's entries, photos and videos, your name on what you write, and, while you're editing an entry, which kind of device you're using (iPhone, iPad or Mac). A shared journal is stored in the iCloud account of the person who shared it. Your other journals stay private. Either of you can stop sharing; each of you then keeps a copy of the journal as it was and chooses whether to keep the other person's pages.

Intelligence runs on your device

Photo suggestions, voice entries, search by meaning, Looking Back, suggested titles and tags, and photo descriptions all run on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, using Apple's on-device models. Your entries and photos aren't sent anywhere to do this, not to us, not to Apple's cloud, and not to any other company, and they're never used to train anything. Voice entries keep only the words; the recording isn't kept. Each feature can be turned off in Settings → Intelligence.

Location, weather and maps

If you allow it, Engraven reads your location when you start an entry, to add the place and the weather. To look those up, Engraven sends Apple the location rounded to about a kilometer: to Apple Weather for the weather and to Apple Maps for the place name. The maps in the app are drawn by Apple Maps. Apple doesn't pass this to us. The exact location is saved with your entry, in your iCloud.

Camera, microphone, photos and Face ID

The camera is used only when you take a photo for an entry, the microphone only while you dictate, and your photo library only to show and add your photos. App Lock uses Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode through Apple; Engraven never sees your face data or passcode.

Crash reports

If you choose to share analytics with app developers in your device's Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements, Apple sends us anonymous crash and performance reports. They don't include your entries.

What we never do

No ads, no analytics, no tracking across apps, and your journal is never sold.

Deleting your data

Delete entries or journals in the app at any time; they wait in Recently Deleted until you empty it. Deleting the app removes what's stored on that device. To delete Engraven's data from iCloud on every device, go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage (or Manage Storage) → Engraven → Delete Data, and remove Engraven's folder from iCloud Drive in the Files app to delete backups. A copy kept by someone you shared a journal with is theirs and isn't removed. Parallel 41 holds none of your data, so there is nothing for us to delete, but you're welcome to email us with any question.
